Palembang Grand Mosque

Palembang Grand Mosque or Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I Great Mosque is one of the religious tourism icons in South Sumatra. This mosque was built by Sultan Mahmud Badarudin I Jaya Wikrama around the 18th century, located in the 19 Ilirarea which is one of the original villages of Palembang and Arabia.
There is something unique that I found in this historic mosque:
First, the Palembang Great Mosque had been the largest mosque in Indonesia for several years.
Second, the shape of the building which is a blend of three architectures.Indonesian, European and Chinese Architecture. Indonesian architecture covers almost all mosque buildings. While European architecture can be seen from the entrance of the mosque. Chinese architecture can be seen from the roof of the mosque in the form of a temple.

Third, one stop area. Since the mosque is next to the Pasar 16 Ilir, of course the crowded market will affect the atmosphere of the mosque. And as a typical grand mosque, of course, the sacredness sometimes makes it seem like it is not free to touch. In contrast to the Great Mosque is always welcome to every newcomer. There are no strict rules here.
There are four large rooms provided so that migrants are free. The main room or the middle is used only to pray alone or in congregation for men .. The right room is used only for prayer alone or in congregation for women. The left room is often used for seminars. The upper room or the second floor is for the mosque's management as a library. Whereas the back room without prayer rug is a place to relax.

Anyone can be here, regardless of the rich or even beggars. No matter what religion. Want to eat, talk, relax until you sleep well, no one forbids. Arguably the Great Mosque became an alternative community to rest for a while after struggling in the tiring 16 Ilir Market. Even parents often make the Great Mosque as a place of rest for children so that parents are not disturbed when shopping. Keep in mind, every time the call to prayer echoes, almost all people except children are told to do prayer in congregation.

Fourth, open heaven. The mosque, which operates almost 24 hours a day and seven days a week, is increasingly crowded when Ramadan arrives. Especially if when breaking the fast. Food openings from the pilgrims flowed like tap water. Even traditional food can be tasted here. For those who are more flat, can visit because of snacks such as compote, until heavy food such as Padang rice is useless. Anyway, all migrants get rations without discrimination.

Fifth, he exclaimed Eid prayer. When the Eid arrives, people will suffer in the Grand Mosque and its surroundings. Palembang is really bleached. JalanSudirman is filled with worshipers. Market 16 became a pilgrim market. Even the Ampera Bridge was temporarily closed.

Sixth, wifi heaven. For those who like to surf the internet, you can get it for free with nebengwifi. Calculate saving data quota.

The Great Mosque had been renovated around the year 2000, and was only completed in 2003, and was officially inaugurated by Megawati who served as President of the Republic of Indonesia at that time. Intrigued by the Great Mosque of Palembang? Of course this mosque is not one of your religious tourism destinations.
