Kuto Besak Fortress
Kutobesak fortress is a
palace building which in the XVIII century became the center of the Palembang
Sultanate. The idea of establishing kutobesak fortress was initiated by
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I who ruled in 1724-1758 and the construction was
completed by his successor, Sultan Mahmud Bahauddin who ruled in 1776-1803.
Sultan Mahmud
Badaruddin is a Palembang Darussalam sultanate figure who is realistic and
practical in international trade as well as a cleric who makes Palembang the
center of religious literature in the archipelago. Marking his role as sultan
he moved from KutoLamo Palace to KutoBesak. The Dutch called KutoBesak a nieuwe
palace, aka a new palace.
The fort began to be
built in 1780 with an unknown architect and the supervision of work was
entrusted to a Chinese. Brick adhesive cement used limestone in the interior of
the Ogan River coupled with egg whites. The time spent to build KutoBesak is
approximately 17 years. It was officially occupied on Monday 21 February 1797.
Kutobesak fortress
stands in a very open, strategic and at the same time very beautiful position.
Its position is facing the Musi River. At present it is occupied by the
Sriwjaya Military Regional Command (KODAM).
The construction and
structuring of the area around the kutobesak fortress Plaza is projected to
become an open-air entertainment place that sells the charm of Musi and
historic buildings. When viewed from the SeberangUlu area or the Ampera Bridge,
the view is a large courtyard against a background of palm trees in the
courtyard ofkutobesak fortress, and the water tower in the Palembang Mayor's
Office.
At night, the
atmosphere will feel more dramatic. The light from the row of garden lights
creates a yellow reflection on the surface of the river.
